2021 Mitigation Plan & JSA Handbook

Hello everyone! We’re only a few weeks away from the start of the 2021 Season.

We just posted the updated Mitigation Plan & JSA Handbook for this year. Please take a moment to read through the Mitigation Plan as some things have changed from last year.

Here’s a brief overview of what to expect:
– All players will be required to wear a mask while in the dugout
– Catchers and Umpires will need to maintain 6 feet of distance or both wear a mask
– Sanitization practices remain the same as last year
– Anyone exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19 will not participate in a JSA activity

All members are expected to follow the mitigation plan – please let us know if you have any questions and help us make this season safe and fun for everyone. We’re excited for another summer of softball and can’t wait to see everyone out on the ballfields!

Umpires needed for 2021 Adult Slow Pitch Softball

The Juneau Douglas Officials Association (JDOA) and the Juneau Softball Association (JSA) are recruiting Umpires for the 2021 Adult Slow Pitch Softball Season.

Training begins March 9 and runs through the end of April for the start of the season the first week in May.  Trainings are scheduled for 1.5-hour sessions, from 6-7:30 PM via WebEx.  There are no new rules or rule books but there is a 2021 Umpire Manual that includes some significant changes in mechanics.  We will be discussing these changes the first two weeks.

Umpires are needed 2-3 games per night, 1-5 nights a week Monday through Friday. 1-2 weekend tournaments are held during the season. Experience is desired, but training is available. This is a great opportunity to earn some extra money while getting some exercise! JSA Players who decide to be Umpires will have their player fees waived for the season.

2021 Season Information

We hope you are all recovering from the 2020 season and have been safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The JSA board and our Executive Director have spent the last few months pregaming for the 2021 season. We attended an all-day planning session in October and had our monthly board meetings in November and January. Below is some information regarding the upcoming season that we wanted to share.

Our COVID-19 Committee will continue to meet this year to prepare for our upcoming season. They will be looking over the mitigation plan that was put into place during last season to make sure it is up to date. They will also be in contact with CBJ, Parks and Rec and JDOA to make sure we have everything in place that is needed for us to begin our season on time. Updated information will be sent out to all members as needed.

Spring Season

Spring Season was something that we tried to start for the first time last year. Unfortunately, due to COVID, we did not have the opportunity to have Spring Season. The 2021 season will start May 1st and go through May 30th with a Spring Coed League. This will be similar to what second season has been in the past, only in reverse. We are hoping this will give teams a little more time to recruit players, like those finishing high school and college semesters, in turn increasing membership.

Regular Season

Our Regular Season will begin May 31st and end August 20th.

Registration for both Spring Season and Regular Season will be live beginning February 1st. Click on our Registration tab on the website to start this process.

Team & Player Fees

The JSA board has made the decision to raise the fees for both teams and players. Here is the new free breakdown:

  • Spring Season Player Fee – $35.00
  • Spring Season Coed Team Fee – $310.00
  • Regular Season Player Fee – $60.00
  • Regular Season Coed Team Fee – $535.00
  • Regular Season Men’s/Women’s Team Fee – $800.00

During our all-day planning session, the JSA board made the decision to have our annual Rainball tournament held June 24th-27th this year. This decision was made with the hope of getting more local and out of town participation. Rainball will include Men, Women and Coed teams again this year. Please be prepared for the possibility of games being played ALL DAY on Friday June 24th. These changes have been made with the focus on making this a great overall tournament for our membership.

The JSA board will be needing assistance from the league to make Rainball successful since our board members are first and foremost players. Volunteers are welcomed and encouraged! We will need help in the concession stand and with sponsors for the tournament.

End of Season Tournament

JSA will be hosting an End of Season Tournament that will be held July 30th-August 1st. More decisions regarding this tournament still need to be made by the board. We will provide additional information as decisions are made.

Open Board Seats

The JSA board currently has the following three vacant board seats. If you are registered in one of these divisions and are interested in being on the JSA board, please let us know.

  • Men’s F
  • Coed C
  • Coed G

Feel free to reach out to us with any questions and be on the lookout for additional information that will be sent out in the upcoming months.

Pioneers of Softball, 2020

Juneau Sports Association is pleased to announce the honorees for 2020:

The honorees have dedicated decades to promoting the Juneau Sports Association and its adult softball program. Due to COVID precautions JSA was unable to present these awards in person. Please join us in recognizing and congratulating them for their contribution to softball on and off the field.

Imperial Saloon is honored in the Sponsor Category. JSA has enjoyed Imperial Saloon and its sponsorship of Men’s, Women’s and Coed leagues both for season and tournaments for 20+ years. We are grateful for their support of our association. Imperial has produced a few hundred of top notch players and brought their fans along for the ride. Thank you for your longstanding support and assurance of the continuation of local softball leagues. Please stop in to the Imperial and thank Shelly Hurt for her dedication and endless support for the game. We can’t say enough how much we appreciate you but we can try to show you!!

Pete Carran is honored in the Player Category. Pete Carran and Rufus have been with us on and off the field for so long we can’t remember a time without them. Rufus has left the field, but the memories will remain. The insistence of you throwing the Frisbee for him while you chatted with Pete after a game are still visible. Pete, thank you for being the most persistent Utility Player a team could ask for. Wherever a manager needs you that’s where you play the hardest. No one gives 110% like Pete. Pitcher, Shortstop, 2nd Base, OF and manager extraordinaire. He was awarded All Tourney and Tournament MVP more than once in his softball career. Thank you for your energy, great expectations of your teammates and encouragement to do better. You are a great sport and best looking dude in the dugout!
